7 October 2022 YA releases (peak Halloween spooky season edition)
You would think that October would be brimming with new YA titles just begging to be read during spooky season. But in reality, the boat has already sailed in terms of Halloween releases. You either go big on the marketing and drop early October, or you get that book out there in September to build momentum. IMHO.
Still, there are some books dropping this month that have a little grave twinkle, like fairy dust, but made of something more sinister. If you will.
So, here are some titles I’ve picked out that piqued my interest:
‘Pretty Dead Queens’ by Alexa Donne - Oct 4th - Dead homecoming queens, a copycat killer, a mystery that really must be solved before someone else gets the chop. I’m not always into thrillery type YA books, but there’s something about this one calling to me…
‘Dark Room Etiquette’ by Robin Roe - Expected Oct 11th - I can’t seem to track down an “available” option for this book in the UK, but maybe it’ll be more clear closer to release day. A psychological thriller surrounding a kidnapping, and the victim experiencing a blurring of what’s fact and what’s fiction. Spooky cover.
‘The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond’ by Amanda Glaze - Oct 4th (Kindle) - Twins, mediums, can open the veil between life and death. A historically set supernatural mystery? I think that’s the best way to decsribe it. It looks like so much fun. And haunting too.
‘The Restless Dark’ by Erica Waters - Oct 4th (Oct 27th hardback) - I’ve seen this book described as “genre-bending” and that immediately got me excited for what the reading experience might be like. I don’t really know how best to explain the summary of this one… It sounds twisty and thrillery but with a healthy does of the strange and the psychological? Plus, the cover is chefs kiss perfect.
‘Grave Things Like Love’ by Sara Bennett Wealer - Oct 11th - I feel like we’re long overdue for an honest-to-goodness YA contemporary romance with a paranormal twist. And this promises to deliver that. There’s even a seance involved, and quite frankly I’d be offended if there wasn’t.
‘The Whispering Dark’ by Kelly Andrew - Oct 20th - Mm. Yeah. I’m going to need this one. Billed as “‘The Raven Boys’ mmets 'Ninth House’” so that’s coming home with me based off just that. The marketing be working for me here.
‘The Witch Hunt’ by Sasha Peyton Smith - Oct 11th (Kindle) - The only sequel on the list! It’s a month for starters or standalones, it seems. I haven’t read ‘The Witch Haven’ but considering the title and the time of year it bags itself an automatic spot on this list. It looks like a fun series though! Tagged “‘The Last Magician’ meets ‘The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy’” - I’m down!
What are you reading for spooky season? Let us know!
