In which Bridgerton’s Lady Whistledown reviews the entire Netflix series and cast
It has come to our attention that there is a certain series of plays that have captured the hearts and imagination of every audience member. While this in itself is astonishing, for even I have my critics, what is more outrageous is that I myself beheld the whole experience in less than three days.
As you can expect, one is a very busy lady. Preparations for the new season in town are already well under way, and although there is little in the way of gossip or scandal, there is still much to be done.
From start to finish it keeps you guessing, and as someone who considers herself always in the know, someone who has the secret whispered from eager lips before they even realise it should not be uttered aloud… Well… It held me fixated, enraptured.
I will raise a glass of fizz to the writers when I next grace a ballroom, for they spun an alluring and exciting tale. Quite clearly a play of two acts: the before and the after and I am relieved that we are finally exploring life after the prize is won. We can only guess that a certain Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy had similar teething problems once wed, although what I know, and do not, regarding that situation is for another day.
The players were immaculate.
Daphne Bridgerton
The jewel of the season. Has anyone seen a more thrilling gem than she? Not only did she provide me with more material than I knew what to do with, she played such a good game. And let us not forget that this is all it is: A game of marriage and fortune. I do sincerely hope to be alive when the day comes that love matches are the preferred. However, until us women are free from our financial dependency, alas, the safest course is to marry.
Lady Danbury
A doyenne after my own heart. Quick-witted, sharply tongued and intelligent. Everything a lady should pretend not to be if she is to attract the best suitors. Lady Danbury, however, found an unusual route to an independent and vibrant life. What we particularly like about her is the power she exudes. Every young debutante would do well to show her deference, or at the very least stay on her good side.
Penelope Featherington
There are some interesting rumours concerning our darling Penelope, none of which will I confirm, nor deny. Perhaps considered the underdog, or the dark horse of the season, however, we firmly believe that when the light chooses to shine on her it promises to be a spectacle like no other.
Eloise Bridgerton
There is so much to like about Eloise and once this young bud has blossomed into society I am interested to see what path she decides to go down. We have high hopes that she does not become swallowed by this society’s rules and expectations… If there were ever one for taking control of their own destiny, it is she. But how many hearts will she break in the process?
Viscount Bridgerton (Anthony)
Never have we ever witnessed such naughtiness! Some of which I could not possibly have repeated within my regular circular, it would be enough to make the ladies drop their teacup and even the men would choke on their breakfast meats. A strapping young man with the world on his shoulders… But we saw what you did after the opera. I am most concerned for his future, it is my sincerest hope that he is not crushed under the weight of his responsibility.
Siena Rosso
A particularly pretty and enterprising opera singer. I have not had the pleasure of meeting her personally, but I have heard her sing and she can hold the most beautiful notes. It is our belief that with patience she could sing any aria she wanted.
Baroness Featherington
Portia is like any mother of daughters in this world. We see her kind of intense focus and desperation to see her offspring carefully married often. It is a full time occupation, however, if your own husband is secretly hampering your efforts, then I am afraid my dear, you are doomed.
Simon Basset
What is there left to say about this dashing young gentleman that has not already been said? Perhaps many did not expect to be so readily swept away by his interesting countenance and titillating presence. Our resident Tall, Dark and Brooding. On more than one occasion I wished dearly that I could rap him across the knuckles with my fan and advise him to change course.
Benedict Bridgerton
There is some suggestion that this Bridgerton may not follow the path straight and narrow. Whereas I will not comment on what led me to this assumption, I will say that I hope he can find a way to reconcile his feelings and not become trapped within the walls of a predefined destiny. Luckily for him, being an affluent male, there are always other ways to satisfy one's interests in secret, however unfortunate it is that it must remain so.
Marina Thompson
Quite the scandal! She kept us quite on our toes, and although I cannot say what happened behind closed doors, the events which unfolded in public (and by which I mean that which was made public to either myself or other interested parties) made me feel quite keenly for her plight. As a woman, in our society, the predicament she found herself in was quite impossible. It is with great relief that her story did not end in complete tragedy.
Queen Charlotte
Such a fascinating creature! To be in her presence sparks something akin to terror, but in the most delicious way. I have seen many leading players stumble before her. The power of status, and a stare to match it.
There are more players who make it onto the stage, however I have other business to attend and I cannot sit at my writing desk all the day. This must go to print with haste, so I will leave you with this: If you have not yet experience the delightful entertainment of Bridgerton, then I urge you to hurry along and get a seat front and centre (or a box, if your purse will stretch so far). It is, dare I say, the most thrilling play. The characters will delight you, and I daresay you might even fall in love… But who with? Please do let me know who your heart chooses. I find it eternally fascinating.
