The Dark Academicals: spicy books to fantasy worlds to Greek mythology, the season 3 podcast line-up

The podcast where we delve into the mythos of dark academia, one book at a time.

On October 4th the third season of our podcast, ‘The Dark Academicals’, begins streaming. There are six episodes this season, five dark academia reads and a dark academia adjacent title (you can find more info about our classifications in our introductory episode here) and episode will be released every other Tuesday.

We’re still in love with recording and producing this podcast - it’s a true labour of love for us - and we’ve tackled some incredible titles, some not as great titles, but every conversation has been so much fun.

You can listen via Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and this very website!

A full down of the titles and stream dates are:

  • ‘Ninth House’ by Leigh Bardugo (4 October)

  • ‘Bunny’ by Mona Awad (18 October)

  • ‘A Lesson in Thorns’ by Sierra Simone (1 November)

  • ‘The Song of Achilles’ by Madeline Miller (15 November)

  • ‘Vicious’ by VE Schwab (29 November)

  • ‘The Swallows’ by Lisa Lutz (13 December)

Our titles for this season cross so many genres: fantasy, smut, Greek mythology retellings, superhero stories, and just plain weird. We found it really interesting to explore the way that genre alters the feeling that really cements dark academia for us. It’s really helping us to shape our ideas and benchmarks of the genre and the way we compare the novels.

You can listen via Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and this very website!

If you want to read along this season, we have a list of every title we’ve tackled across the podcast so far that are available through bookshop.org to buy in a playlist below. Buying through our affiliate link helps us fund the podcast and the website, and supports independent bookshops.
