Queer book releases in 2024 (LGBTQ+ science fiction to romantasy to YA contemporary)

I had to get all my keywords in that title because this one is for all my fellow queer huns who love to read queer books across all genres. For the readers who can't prediect what mood they will be in when they want to pick up a book, for my bookish magpies who like pretty covers, and academic narrative buffs who like to nerd out on historical or literary retellings. This one is for you, babes.

Ugh, there are so many great queer reads coming out in 2024, and what I have for you here is just the tip of the iceberg!

I've picked out the ones that have caught my eye already. Let me know if any of these are on your TBR lists too.

As always, I've linked to the full summaries on Goodreads.

1. ‘Earthflown’ by Frances M, illusrated by M. Litarnes - A speculative piece that ticks so many boxes for me. It’s flirting with Dystopian fiction, as a genre, I think, but it's much more in the vein of ‘Green Rising' by Lauren James. Eco-aware, I think. Anyway, the cover is stunning. Expected March 2024.

2. ‘So Let Them Burn' by Kamilah Cole - Jamaican inspired fantasy, and says it is for fans of ‘Iron Widow’ so that's an immediate yes for me. I loved ‘Iron Widow' so much, and incidentally the follow up should be out in 2024 also. The cover for this book is so pretty and the summary leaves me itching to grab it up. Expected January 2024.

3. ‘Dear Wendy’ by Ann Zhao - This book is set at college, featuring two aromantic and asexual protagonists. I'm not sure if I've ever read a book from a dual POV like that so I'm really excited for that. I love the softness this read seems to bring, especially nestled within this list of quite intense speculative and fantasy fiction. Expected April 2024.

4. ‘Wish you Weren't Here' by Erin Baldwin - Summer camp has to be one of my all-time favourite plot devices and settings. It's the temporary state of it. The warm summer nights. The possibility and inevitability. Love it. So let's make it queer and I'm doubly there. This looks like such a fun YA romp. Can't wait. Expected June 2024.

5. ‘Redsight’ by Meredith Mooring - Described as a “space opera for fans of Gideon the Ninth’. Again, hello yes, sign me up. The main character, from the summary, sounds like a total badass. This makes my science fiction loving heart sing: “positive bisexual and disability representation which follows a blind priestess who powers warships for the galactic military by manipulating space time.” Expected February 2024.

6. ‘Most Ardently' by Gabe Cole Novoa - A trans focused retelling of the classic ‘Pride and Prejudice'. I am so here for all these classic reimaginings with an LGBTQIA+ focus. So much fun, and so needed imho. Expected January 2024.

7. ‘Don't Let It Break Your Heart' by Maggie Horne - Oh the cover makes my heart do a flip. I'm really excited for this, even though I feel like it will quietly break me on the inside, you know? You know.

8. ‘Someone You Can Build A Nest In’ by John Wiswell - Look. At. That. Cover. And it promises to be creepy. I need it. No other words. Expected April 2024.

9. ‘A Darker Mischief' by Derek Milman - There it is! There had to be at least one book to make a comparison to ‘The Secret History', and here it is. So, you know what that means! It will probably make it onto the podcast at some point soon. Expected July 2024.

10. ‘Everyone I Kissed Since You Got Famous' by Mae Marvel - This looks like the perfect summer read. Something light but with enough gravity to keep you grounded. A queer romantic read to go straight into the beach bag. Expected June 2024.

11. ‘Icarus' by K. Ancrum - No, forget everything I've already said. THIS is the book I need. Right now. From the cover to the summary… It's just chefs kiss perfect. Queer YA romance, a reimagining of the Icarus story. Give it to me. Expected March 2024.

12. ‘Canto Contigo' by Jonny Garza Villa - “When a Mariachi star transfers school-” say less. Take my money. Queer, YA, musically inclined. It's all and everything I want. Expected April 2024.

13. ‘Escaping Mr Rochester' by L.L. McKinney - A queer retelling of Jane Eyre? Colour me intrigued. It would be unfair of me to leave this off this list when I have the Jane Austen one on here. I just love Jane Eyre… I'm trying to be less precious about it. I'm happy to give this a whirl. Expected January 2024.

14. ‘A Dark and Drowning Tide' by Allison Saft - I am still reading ‘A Far Wilder Magic' by this author, but the writing style is something I gel with so I'm quite excited by this. Plus, the vibe, the cover art, it's so perfect. Expected March 2024.

15. ‘Faebound’ by Saara El-Arifi - This looks set to be an absolute stunner of a series. Big, bold and sweeping. Buckle in for this one. Expected January 2024.

16. ‘Something Kindred' by Ciera Birch - Ugh. The cover. The Southern Gothic vibe. This is just… I know I keep saying it but I mean it. I need it. Please. Expected August 2024.

Whew. We made it. I think 2024 is going to be a great year for books, and especially for queer fiction. I'm excited!
