Sophie’s Favourite Books of 2023
Is it too late for this? Possibly? Maybe? Eh, I don’t care.
These are some of my favourite vlogs, blog posts, reels and photos to look at on the book internet so I’m happy to throw my own titles into the ring…even if it’s already mid-January.
We accidentally took a little break from the blog for a few weeks there - apparently we really needed a break over Christmas, but we’re back and we have some really fun plans in place, especially for our podcast, The Dark Academicals.
But before we get into that, we’re looking back over a strange year, and a strange reading year too.
I read 146 books in 2023, and of those 146 I only had 9 5-star reads, with 11 4.5-star reads - several of which slid under the wire in the last few weeks of December! But I had a shuffle to get some pleasing even numbers to bring you the top of the top, and my honourable mentions.
My Favourite Books of the Year (in no particular author)
‘The Shadow Cabinet’ by Juno Dawson
‘Eyes Guts Throat Bone's’ by Moira Fowley
‘The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi’ by SA Chakraborty
‘The Whispering Dark’ by Kelly Andrew

The ‘Chestnut Springs’ series, Elsie Silver
‘Girl, Goddess, Queen’ by Bea Fitzgerald
‘Leviathan Wakes’ by James SA Corey
The ‘Hidden Legacy’ series, Ilona Andrews
‘Swift and Saddled’ by Lyla Sage
‘Red Rising’ by Pierce Brown
‘Fourth Wing’ by Rebecca Yarros
Honourable Mentions
‘Frontier’ by Grace Curtis
‘The Boyfriend Candidate’ by Ashley Winstead
‘Boyfriend Material’ by Alexis Hall
‘Hell Bent’ by Leigh Bardugo
‘The Cloisters’ by Katy Hays
‘Iron Widow’ by Xiran Jay Zhao
‘Delilah Green Doesn’t Care’ by Ashley Herring Blake

‘Mexican Gothic’ by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
‘She is a Haunting’ by Trang Thanh Tran
‘My Roommate is a Vampire’ by Jenna Levine

I read some books that I really, really loved in 2023 and fell in love with sci-fi which is already continuing into 2024.
