TikTok books that are worth the hype

BookTok has taken over the book world and there’s no going back.

One of the major criticisms of BookTok is that it recommends the same books over and over again, and honestly, that is a large part of it. I do see a lot of the same books popping up time and time again, usually books that I read and were popular in the early years of the book community and not all of them are worth the spot on the list, but a whole bunch of them absolutely are.

There are a handful of titles that pop up all the time that I really want to read - ‘From Blood and Ash’, ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ and ‘The Priory of the Orange Tree’ - and a whole load that I already love. For those I get the hype.

The books are fun, clever, compelling, thought-provoking, full of joy and heart. These books deserve all the love they’re getting.

  • ‘We Were Liars’ by E Lockhart - a beautiful and complicated group of friends visit a private island for the summer and revelations unfurl in a seriously shocking manner. It’s a read-it-in-one-gulp book that’s impossible to put down.

  • ‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt - this classic dark academia novel of an exclusive Greek class at a prestigious university dealing with the fall out of a murder in their midst is one of my very favourites. I’ve read it several times.

  • ‘The Deal’ by Elle Kennedy - Elle Kennedy’s ‘Off Campus’ series of steamy college hockey romances is gloriously fun and sexy and a go-to romance series. I can’t wait for the next book to come out next week!

  • ‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ by Casey McQuiston - a true BookTok fave! This LGBT romance between the first son of the USA and a British prince is swoony and gorgeous and I could read it on a loop.

  • ‘The Song of Achilles’ by Madeline Miller - another absolute favourite book which is worth every ounce of praise. This retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Achilles and Patroclus is stunning, romantic and utterly heart-wrenching and I can’t recommend it enough.

  • ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ by Sarah J Maas - you either love it or you hate it, but I love this whole series. A fae fantasy romance retelling of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ that completely and utterly hits the spot.

They all sound pretty amazing, right? Yeah, exactly. Maybe not all BookTok recs are worth your time, but these ones really, really are.

Have you bought into the BookTok hype yet? Have you found any favourites?
