6 books to read if you loved ‘Wednesday’ on Netflix

Hands up who’s obsessed with ‘Wednesday’? Me too. I inhaled it in two days flat.

I think it’s quickly going to become a cult favourite, just like the beloved 90s movies. Speaking of the movies, how call is it that Christina Ricci was in the show too?! I really loved that touch.

I think the show had the perfect balance of appealing to teen and adult viewers, with plenty to grip onto for everyone.

Let’s break down the elements of ‘Wednesday’ that make up the show:

  • Found family

  • Outcasts

  • Spooky, dark, Gothic vibes

  • Boarding school

  • Murder mystery

I mean, what a list. All of those are big tropes for me so it’s really no surprise I adored it, and it’s basically a given that books that connect those tropes. Sign me up, honestly.

‘All of Us Villains’ by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman

With shades of ‘The Hunger Games’, in the remote city of Ilvernath seven families name a champion every generation to compete in a tournament to the death. While one families usually wins, this time the playing field is even and it’s going to get dicey. Sarah loved this one and I recently grabbed myself a copy too!

‘Cemetery Boys’ by Aiden Thomas

Aidan Thomas’s ghostly romance is a fan fave and I feel like it’s been on my TBR for wayyy too long. When Yadriel accidentally summons a ghost, he really doesn’t expect to get attached to him, let alone fall in love with him. This is one of the many, many books that has anguished on my TBR for for too long - I need to get around to it in 2023.

‘A Deadly Education’ by Naomi Novik

Set in a boarding school where a magical tournament determines whether you graduate, or you die. I honestly don’t want to know anymore about this book - that’s enough for me to say a hearty ‘Yes, please!’, even with a whole host of mixed reviews for this series.

‘The Mary Shelley Club’ by Goldy Moldavsky

We read this for season two of our podcast, ‘The Dark Academicals’, and while we didn’t love it, I think it’s definitely worth giving a go if you want those dark, mystery vibes from ‘Wednesday’ as the characters get caught up in a dangerous game of secrets and pranks as they try to uncover some truths. You can read our full review here.

‘Mexican Gothic’ by Silvia Moreno Garcia

Now this is a sneaky peek for you, but ‘Mexican Gothic’ is coming up on season four of the podcast and I’m so excited to dive in! This historical Gothic fantasy is set in a big old house in 1950s Mexico - need I say more? With a dark family history and menacing nightmares, this sounds perfect for everyone who fell for ‘Wednesday’.

‘The Name of the Star’ by Maureen Johnson

Another dark mystery, but this time connecting with the Jack the Ripper murders in Victorian London as a copycat killer begins terrorising the city in modern day. With no friends and new to a boarding school, Rory takes it upon herself to attempt to solve the murders. This series is so popular with so many people and I really need to start it one day!

Have you watched ‘Wednesday’ yet? Is it on your watchlist?
