3 books to read if you’re obsessed with ‘Nobody Wants This’ on Netflix
I’m obsessed. Several of my friends are obsessed. The whole of the internet is obsessed.
And I don’t blame them.
The chemistry between Kristen Bell and Adam Brody is electric, Adam Brody is absolutely everything, a rom-com that genuinely rom and com, older protagonists with established lives and careers, a podcast elements and 30 minute episodes. It doesn’t get better than that. This is a really, really special show and I don’t think I’m the only person who thinks that.
‘Nobody Wants This’ has healed many a millennial heart already, and I have to confess that I haven’t even finished it yet because I don’t want it to be over.
In preparation for how bereft I’m going to be after I finish this very special show, I’ve started thinking about books that I could reread to give me those feelings. I think you guys could benefit from these too.
‘Book Lovers’ by Emily Henry
I almost can’t explain it, but there’s something about Emily Henry’s books in general, but especially this one, that really fits the vibe of ‘Nobody Wants This’.
Nora is a high-flying literary agent and Charlie is gifted editor. And they’re work enemies. Nora is always the girlfriend before the happily ever after and she needs a break so her sister whisks her off to a small town for a summer away from the city. It’s a town from a romance novel, and she keeps inexplicably bumping into Charlie…
I adore this book; it’s my favourite Emily Henry novel by far. The humour of Nora and Charlie, the way they have established lives and families before they come together, and the sharp banter between them is very reminiscent of Noah and Joanne.
‘The Unhoneymooners’ by Christina Lauren
‘The Unhoneymooners’ is my favourite Christina Lauren novel so any chance to recommend it, I’ll take it.
Christina Lauren is another author that matches ‘Nobody Wants This’ on vibe and humour as their writing is sharp and funny, but also with a lot of heart and a lot of romantic tension.
At Olivia’s twin sister’s wedding, everyone goes down with food poisoning, except Olivia and the best man, Ethan. Olivia and Ethan’s mutual hatred doesn’t stop them stepping in and taking the nonrefundable honeymoon in Hawaii. When Oliva meets her new boss at the hotel, a white lie springs out and their trip spirals out of control.
It’s such a fun book and effortlessly romantic, just like ‘Nobody Wants This’.
‘The Intimacy Experiment’ by Rosie Danan
The setup of this novel is remarkably similar to ‘Nobody Wants This’: Naomi runs a sex-positive start-up and Ethan is a Rabbi (sounds familiar, right?). They team up and host a series on modern intimacy to help Ethan raise some money for his shul and for Naomi to extend her experience in giving live seminars. But will their attraction to each other pose a problem they can’t solve?
There’s lots of similarity in the melding of two very different worlds, experiences and perspectives, and love overcoming them.
Genuinely might re-read ‘Book Lovers’ instead of finishing ‘Nobody Wants This’ because I’m not ready to say goodbye to Joanne and Noah just yet…
