Book Review: ‘My Vampire Plus-One’ by Jenna Levine (spicy vampire rom-com)

You know how there are some books that make you go, ‘oh, so reading is actually fun’? ‘My Vampire Plus-One’ is one of those books. Every single page of this book is a joy to read - it’s silly, it’s fun, it’s romantic and a bit spicy too.

I really loved Cassie and Frederick in ‘My Roommate is a Vampire’ and I wasn’t expecting for Amelia and Reginald to top that in ‘My Vampire Plus-One, but they did.

Fake dating, forced proximity, reformed bad boy, opposites attract - sign. me. up.

It started with a fake date. Now true love is at stake . . .

Amelia Collins is tired of constant questions about her non-existent dating life, so she decides to get everyone off her back once and for all by finding someone – anyone – to pose as her date to a family wedding. If he's annoying, or embarrassing, so much the better.

Coincidentally, Reginald Cleaves has centuries of experience at being rude, infuriatingly arrogant and a fashion eyesore, making him perfect for her purposes.

But as Amelia and Reggie practice their fauxmance and more of Reggie's secrets come to light, Amelia is surprised to find her first impressions could not have been more wrong, and that Reggie’s bark might be worse than his bite ...

But this book is more than romance!

I really wasn’t sure how this would connect to the first book as I didn’t recognise Amelia, but she is the sister of Cassie’s best friend, Sam. It’s a really fun connection and not as obvious as usual companion series. There were connections and interactions while giving us an update on Cassie and Frederick, but without overriding the current story or stealing their thunder.

There’s a really realistic balance between Reggie and Amelia: Reggie respects all the things that are disregarded or mocked by Amelia’s family (her relationships status, her dietary needs), and Amelia allows Reggie to be vulnerable and she helps him to earn his freedom from the ancient vampire collective that are after his life in revenge. It’s such a wholesome, cutesy romance with an added touch of some open-door spice.

The only thing lacking for me was just down to preference - I wanted more of Reggie’s background and his scandalous history that was hinted at a few times. I wanted the gossip!

‘My Vampire Plus-One’ is a fun, silly, romantic romp that strikes the perfect balance between the rom and the com. I really hope that there’s going to be more in this series.
